Surprise Me

Receiving a gift
What a joyful surprise
I see the gleam in your eyes
As you hand over the package wrapped in disguise
You approach from behind
I gasp and swat but I don’t really mind
“Hey! You surprised me!”
I giggle with glee
An act out of nowhere, a jolt of surprise, the exhilaration, the joy of the ride
We put surprises on pedestals
Hoping they live up to what we want them to be
Live off expectations as our foundations
It can quickly get old striving for said sensations
because what’s crazy to me,
the biggest surprise
Is that i don’t like surprises
I don’t like disguises
Not even one bit, i don’t like random rises
Because what i like
Is knowing that you can no longer surprise me
I've seen your best and your worst
Your comfort and your thirst
I've seen your proudest and your loudest
Your mildest and rowdiest
I've held you when you couldn’t keep yourself up
And we’ve fallen down together
So, yes, you make my words come out in a stutter and my heartbeat flutter
But no, there are no more ways you can surprise me
